Hotel Indigo Birmingham Five Points S - UAB
Hotel Indigo Birmingham Five Points S - UAB
The Hotel Indigo Birmingham is located in a landmark Art Deco-style building dating from the early 1930s in the city's historic Five Points South neighborhood. Originally designed for medical offices and across from the first apothecary in Birmingham, the building became a hotel in the 1980s, but still retains its original medical insignia etched above the elevator doors. The hotel's design acknowledges the building's rich history, while incorporating modern amenities, like hardwood floors, spa-inspired showers, luxury bath amenities and linens. We're also adding some exciting (and tasty) options to an area already known as one of the city's premier dining and entertainment districts. The Rx Lounge pays homage to the medical apothecary theme and provides prescriptions in the form of food and beverage curated by acclaimed Chef Niko Romero.

Neighborhoods
The state's largest city is packed with plenty of things to see and do, many of them within or nearby the Five Points South neighborhood. This historic area just minutes from downtown was established in 1887 as its own town. Today, it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and retains the walkable streets and regular community events of a small town, while also boasting several of the brightest stars in Birmingham's culinary sky. Five Points South is a feast for the eyes, too, as home to architecturally significant churches and buildings, plus the whimsical Storyteller fountain that anchors the center of the Five Points Circle.
The Birmingham Botanical Gardens charms visitors with more than 30 themed gardens filling almost 70 acres. From the lush fern glade and showy formal rose garden to the free-form wildflower area, there's a bounty of beautiful blooms and green growing things to admire. Don't miss the Hess Camellia Garden celebrating Alabama's state flower and the Moon Tree, a now-towering sycamore sprouted from a seed that traveled to space on Apollo 14.
Find handcrafted functional art from around the globe at Sojourns Fair-Trade, a cultural gift shop/gallery that specializes in sourcing items produced in sustainable ways that are good for the artisans and the earth. Aromatic candles made in the Middle East, handbags from Vietnam, painted pottery from Tunisia and brilliantly hued hand-knitted socks and hats from Nepal all occupy this colorful, creative space.
Founded in 1951 and owned by the city, The Birmingham Museum of Art contains a massive permanent collection — more than 26,000 works — that is as diverse as it large. From paintings and photography to sculpture and pottery, the art here spans centuries and cultures.
Originally built in 1929 by L.H. Pennington, the buildings that have become the core of Iron City Birmingham have had a long history in the auto industry and left a lasting impression on the Southside landscape. Our historic location was considered one of the most modern car facilities of its time. It is fitting that Iron City’s reconstruction was driven by another entrepreneur in the car business, Steve DeMedicis. In the design by Williams Blackstock Architects, two connected buildings underwent extensive renovation and construction in a two-floor layout that includes three concert stages, state of the art sound system, two bars and a restaurant. Today, it’s the most inspired music and event venue in the city, and we can’t wait to share it with you
Go gritty and get an earful of the city's musical nightlife scene with a visit to The Nick, an old-school spot that presents live music every single night. The acts on its stage range from punk and metal to blues and country; the only constant is a good time amid great sounds.
Saturn, a 500-capacity live music mecca, is one of several venues that have played a part in putting Birmingham on the music map, drawing a steady and diverse selection of local, regional and national artists and bands. Satellite, its more intimate space upfront, is a coffee shop by day, craft cocktail hot spot by night.
Kick back and relax with a smooth martini and even smoother sounds at this sophisticated but not stuffy lounge that frequently features live music, everything from one-man acoustic acts to rock and jazz. A cozy patio area offers alfresco socializing when weather permits, and weekly wine and drink specials keep the party going.
Highlands Bar & Grill dishes up the talents of award-winning Southern chef Frank Stitt. Renowned for its warm, attentive service, the restaurant features Stitt's fresh approach to classic French technique and his commitment to using locally sourced ingredients for dishes like Gulf red snapper in a saffron beurre blanc.
The space is tiny but the big, bold flavors of low-and-slow-smoked meats fill the cramped quarters with heavenly scents. Opt for traditional barbecue favorites like a pulled pork sandwich, or a dish of creamy grits smothered in tangy collard greens and crowned with a mound of tender pulled pork and crispy fried onion rings.
The popular El Barrio's dishes draws its culinary inspiration from regional Mexican recipes and its ingredients from local sources. Colorful street art enhances the south of the border feel. Dishes range from simple fish tacos to more elaborate creations, like the tostada ahogada, a crisped corn tortilla topped with roasted pork, a chile-heavy barbcue sauce and jicama slaw.
